Canadian Wildlife Service; ACMC Board Training
2008 saw the ratification of an Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement (IIBA) covering 13 National Wildlife Areas and Bird Sanctuaries in Nunavut. An important feature of the IIBA is the establishment of Area Co-management Committees (ACMC’s) that will involve Inuit communities in the planning and day-to-day management of these conservation areas
The development and use of accurate standardized terminology will be essential to overcome language barriers and facilitate cross-cultural communication in the ACMCs. To this end, Environment Canada through the Canadian Wildlife Service contracted the Pirurvik Centre to undertake:
- The development of a manual of Inuktitut terms and phrases that will accurately represent English words or concepts that will be used regularly by the ACMCs. This manual was created in collaboration with the Inuktitut speaking members of the Clyde River ACMC.
- The development of both English and Inuktitut training/orientation workshops for Area Co-management Committees with the first pilot deliveries to take place in Clyde River.
