Municipal Training Organization: Inuktitut Co-instruction
In 2009, Pirurvik worked with the Municipal Training Organization (MTO) to translate (from English to Inuktitut) a complete set of manuals, instructor’s guides, course outlines, and exams for the five (5) courses in the Municipal Government Program – Works Foreman stream. This project was undertaken in recognition that many of the municipal workers in Nunavut are more comfortable in Inuktitut as their language of learning. In addition to the translation of the courses, Pirurvik worked alongside the English speaking subject specialist/instructor and provided Inuktitut supplemental instruction during the delivery of the Municipal Works Foreman courses
The courses included:
Municipal Works Operations – An overview of the Community Works Management System (CWMS).
Maintenance Planning & Management – This course emphasizes daily, weekly, seasonal and yearly preventative maintenance activities including setting standards, conducting and maintaining inventories, scheduling maintenance, writing instructions and keeping maintenance records.
Capital Planning & Project Management - Capital Planning concepts and techniques are introduced.
Workplace Safety – How to carry out a safety self-assessment based on the Workers’ Compensation Board Workplace Safety Audit.
Water, Wastewater and Solid Waste Management – This course is about safe, clean drinking water, and the safe disposal of sewage and solid waste.
