Pirurvik has been consistently offering Inuktitut Second Language programs since 2006. Our core program consists of 3 course levels:

Pigiarvik (ISL 1): meaning "a starting point" is Pirurvik's introductory course.
Allurvik (ISL 2):   meaning "next steps" is our second level course.

Allurvik II(ISL 3): is a continuation of the first Allurvik course.    Atangiivik (ISL 4): meaning "bringing together or completing" is our intermediate level course.

Delivery:

Our core course delivery occurs from September to December and from January to April. We are commited to providing consistent access to our courses to ensure that students can continue their learning.

In the classroom:
Pirurvik offers an exclusively Inuktitut learning environment to all of its students, from absolute beginners to mother-tongue speakers. We have found that this is the most effective way to build listening skills among our students and to get them speaking Inuktitut quickly. We also restrict the size of classes to approximately 8 students to ensure all have equal opportunity for interactive learning, intensive drilling and conversational practice.

Inuktitut Second Language Strategies:
ISL students tend to take a more analytical approach to language learning. They try to de-code the structure of Inuktitut in order to make sense of a language very different from their own. Pirurvik has developed extensive notes on introductory grammar concepts and explanations. These notes are woven into the lessons and are also indexed on the Tusaalanga.ca website at: www.tusaalanga.ca/grammar

To ensure that students do not become too focused on grammar,  Pirurvik re-enforces the language spoken in real life situations through a series of dialogues and practical in class language drills.

Resources:
Pirurvik has invested significant time and resources developing attractive and user-friendly learning materials to support our programs. The centrepiece of our ISL programs is Tusaalanga.ca, an award-winning website with 20+ lessons, over 1,200 words and expressions with attached soundfiles that students can listen to in order to perfect their pronunciation. Tusaalanga also features dialogues with soundfiles and exercises for students to practise on their own time. As part of our in-class programs, Pirurvik also prints a handbook for each student containing all of the learning materials that are used. This provides students with materials they can bring and refer to in the classroom.

Assessment & Certification:
Pirurvik conducts evaluations of our students’ achievements at the end of their programs. This is an opportunity to provide students with feedback on their strengths in Inuktitut and areas for improvement. It also enables Pirurvik to consider the effectiveness of our own teaching and to make improvements in our delivery.
