Job Description

Position Summary

The Pirurvik Centre is an Inuit-owned institute of Inuktut higher learning based in Iqaluit.  Among Pirurvik’s initiatives are two ground-breaking programs focused on Inuit wellbeing, Arnaup Makimaninga (Reclaiming the Whole Woman or RTWW) and Angutiup Makimaninga (Reclaiming the Whole Man  or RTWM).

Together, the programs are designed to build healthier, more resilient Inuit men and women by restoring the bonds between generations and by offering the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills particularly in the natural classroom of the Arctic environment.

The Director of Makimaniq (Wellbeing) Programs is a full-time position based at the Pirurvik Centre to focus on the continuing development and expansion of our Inuit Makimaningat initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Director of Makimaniq (Wellbeing) Programs will provide leadership in supporting our Inuit Makimaningat programs through the following activities:

  • Working with Pirurvik’s management team to access and implement funding in support of our Inuit Makimaningat programs;

  • Facilitating the work of advisory committees for RTWW and RTWM, as well as partnerships with specific communities;

  • Involvement of implementation of the RTWW and RTWM programs;

  • Planning and co-ordinating training initiatives, especially in the natural classroom of the Arctic environment, but also in the classroom at the Pirurik Centre;

  • Liasing with and supporting Elder professors and knowledge keepers to enable them to participate in Pirurvik’s Inuit Makimaningat initiatives;

  • Coordinating and participating in the collection, documentation and teaching of Inuit knowledge related to men and women;

  • Planning and implementation of facilitator training;

  • Working with Pirurvik’s production team to improve existing resources for the teaching and learning of Inuit knowledge and skills; This includes the completion and publishing of two comprehensive manuals for RTWW and RTWM.

  • In addition, the Wellbeing Project Coordinator will lead the planning and co-ordination of Pirurvik’s land-based course deliveries as part of the Aurniarvik and Qimattuvik certificate programs

Knowledge and Experience

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • Basic knowledge of Inuit culture and best practices;

  • Experience co-ordinating projects/programs; and

  • Experience working with community-based groups.

Skills and Abilities

Essential skills for this position include:

  • Literacy skills in English and computing;

  • The ability to work with unilingual Inuit;

  • The ability to write funding proposals and work with project funders;

  • The ability to work well with a team and the performance of professional ethics are crucial.

Skills and abilities in the following areas would be great assets:

  • Functional speaking and writing skills in Inuktitut

  • Experience planning for land trips during different seasons;

  • Computing skills;

  • The ability to work independently and to take the initiative in contributing ideas and completing tasks beyond the basic scope of work.

Benefits

A one-bedroom housing unit in Iqaluit is available to rent as part of this position.

Pirurvik offers a monthly housing allowance of $1,000 ($12,000 per annum).

As a full-time member of the Pirurvik Centre staff, you are entitled to:

·       20 days paid annual leave

The salary will be based on the experience and skills the candidate brings to the job.  Salaries for Pirurvik staff are comparable to positions in government, the education sector and Inuit organizations.
